Web 2.0 Drives Collaboration Between Researchers

in Uncategorized

When we started the Avert-IT project it seemed getting individual researchers to work together might be an uphill struggle. For centuries it seems scientists have mostly worked behind closed doors. There hasn’t been too much collaboration between complimentary skills.

In Peer Review Needs New Technologies we heard explained the problem to date has been technology but that’s just an excuse. With 300 million people on Facebook it has to be possible for small numbers of researchers to share internet hosted services.

In A Role for Social Media in Healthcare we wrote about the opportunity for clinicians to use the Web 2.0 tools in our Clinical Research Hub to get more done, more quickly and have it published/reviewed in weeks rather than years.

The recent announcement of IBMs Health Analytics Center confirms there’s commercial value to be achieved in aggregating and researching health data.

And the BBC has featured Mendeley in its article Strength in Science Collaboration as follows:

“The software is proving a hit with high-profile scientists working within top institutions including MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Cambridge and the University of Michigan.
Mr Henning says the site has roughly 70,000 users, and is growing at a rate of 40% each month.
He says the site’s current features will remain free, but they hope to build up a profitable model too.
“We will be introducing additional premium features later this year, such as more storage space, more sharing features for labs.”

It seems our Clinical Research Hub will not only be join the tsunami of change in the development of health care research. It will also have some great tools to help our members find, share and collaborate with like minded experts everywhere.
