Avantrasara is a commercial organization, working alongside clinicians, mathematicians, scientists and engineers. Our objective is achieving innovation in healthcare, driven by clinicians, enabled by engineers, and delivered though commerce. Working with partners in the Avert-IT research project, we found the typical cycle of innovation in healthcare has a number of limitations, particularly in respect of the targeting and funding of research, productization of the results, and adoption by healthcare providers. When the innovation cycle is driven by commercial interests many opportunities for improvement fail to meet the requirements for reward at the minimal risk required business. Governments offer to fund research where the outcomes are less certain but potential rewards are significant. But this funding isn’t typically available to companies. It’s only offered to consortia comprising science and academia, and led by commercial enterprise (preferably SME). We will reverse the innovation cycle. Clinicians will decide on the innovation required, contribute to the research, and prove the benefits of the outputs. Avantrasara will access the grand funding, manage the projects and commercialize the results. Our starting point is the innovation resulting from the Avert-IT project – technology to help intensivists anticipate episodes of hypotension, mitigating the adverse impacts through reducing depth and duration. The research component of Avert-IT has progressed as expected. By the end of 2009 the technology will be ready to move to clinical trial and we’ll be able to share both the innovation and results with partners. As of July 2009 we’re interested in ideas for the next project and looking to make an application for a new research grant in the Spring of 2010.
