New Roles for Data in Healthcare Technologies

Machine Learning and patient monitoring combine to offer new possibilities for increasing patient safety whilst reducing healthcare costs.

The rapid adoption by the medical community of technologies from science and engineering is driving both. Investment by Governments in the EU and USA helps businesses avoid risks normally associated with innovation in medicine. Meanwhile inexorable growth in healthcare costs offers sustainable business models for new technologies.

The technological innovation and support from governments create the backdrop to our plans for building Avantrasara into an R and D business, working with clinicians, developing products and services for the healthcare sector.

Our combination of data aggregation, machine learning and clinical leadership shows early signs of an ability to anticipate upcoming hypotensive episodes during intensive care. We’ve implemented our own Bayesian Artificial Neural Network to learn from data collected from monitoring equipment and combined with treatment and test results collected at the bedside. The techniques we’ve used are those used as examples by the Economist – see below.

But our opportunities aren’t restricted to intensive care. We’re already seeing the introduction of remote monitoring as a strategy for enabling home based healthcare. The development of new monitoring devices will continue. One day we’ll all be wearing something which monitors our condition, transmitting it to professionals who’ll keep us safe. As a result we’ll see an exponential increase in the data collected, from which new insight will emerge with the help of machine learning technologies such as those Avantrasara is developing.

In recent Special Reports the publication detailed the emergence of Machine Learning as a mechanism for turning data into knowledge and the impact the same innovation will make on healthcare. These two videos are selections from much longer podcasts available on iTunes, and in the special reports available at the Economist – see the individual links.

Evidence of the opportunities for our business is summarised in these videos.
